Is it true that I can feel better during pregnancy with physical activity?
Benefits of routine physical activity both from a physical and mental point of view are now well known. Pregnancy in itself is not a condition in which physical activity is not possible as is often believed. In fact, there are numerous benefits; it will help you live your pregnancy better and prevent those common discomforts of fatigue and back pain.
If you were used to doing some exercise or sports before your pregnancy, you can continue, with proper care, during your pregnancy. If, on the other hand, you have always led a rather sedentary life, it is better to start dedicating some time to physical activity, with moderation.
Regular exercise is really beneficial: it strengthens muscles and increases stamina (which is good training in preparation for birth), improves mobility, has a positive effect on metabolism and circulation (e.g. blood pressure and digestion), reduces the risk of gestational diabetes, prevents back pain and promotes general well-being.
Practising physical activity on a regular basis will also help you to better control your weight and to allow your body to recover after birth in a shorter time. Specific pelvic floor exercises are a good prevention for possible incontinence problems.
Tips for physical activity during pregnancy
– Exercise 30 minutes a day, even longer if you feel up to it. However, avoid excessive strain during pregnancy and in the first weeks after delivery.
– All physical activities that do not pose a particular risk of falls, impacts or injuries are suitable. For example, swimming, walking, water aerobics, cycling, Pilates and yoga are all good.
– Try to move around a little more during the day: take the stairs instead of using the escalator or lift, go shopping walking without carrying too much weight, use the bicycle, take a break at the office to do some relaxation exercises, etc.
– Sign up for a gymnastics/yoga/Pilates class for pregnant or post-natal women. Exercising together is even more fun!
– Arrange with a friend or your partner to do some exercise together.
– Exercising outdoors is a real cure-all: it allows you to enjoy the fresh air and, on sunny days, it stimulates vitamin D production.
If you have any particular discomfort, it is always best to talk to your doctor first or you can consult an osteopath for specific problems. Osteopathy can be a good solution to all those aches and pains that occur during pregnancy, as it promotes a more functional adaptation of the entire body to the physiological changes occurring during pregnancy.
